Youngsters Starting to Shine!

Well after a few weeks into the season how have our young charges progressed ?

Initial adult friendlies looked good with Oli and Zach both showing up well. Oli in particular scoring runs and taking key wickets.

We then arranged a “B” team under 15 friendly and year 9 players Joe S, Liam R and Craig H all batted with great maturity and style. It was also good to see Elliott S take a couple of good wickets.

The bank holiday weekend saw a number of promising performances, ex youth Aaron Irvine helped guide the first team to a winning league start and saved many runs in the field with his athleticism. In the thirds all 10 wickets were taken by under 18s, “old un” Chris Sibley getting 3 but under 15 players Zach and Glen bagged 3 each and Oli 1. In the 4ths Eddie P took 5 wickets and ShaunG scored 26 as the under 15s flew the flag for the 4ths.

Sunday morning saw the under 13s play Stanford-le-Hope in the cup, early setbacks meant we never really set a high enough target but Jack E batted superbly and in the field pacey Sam I and swing bowler Joe W performed with great credit.

Monday saw the first league game for the under 15s against OSS. Fielding first OSS got off to a good start and at 38-0 off 8 overs the pressure was on. However, the introduction of paceman Oli W and Ryan B stemmed the flow. Oli returned excellent figures of 5 for 10 from 4 menacing overs, Shaun G also got in on the act and took 3-7 with some good controlled leg spin which included a terrific diving caught and bowled. OSS ended on 70-9 and EMT took to the field. Declan O and Glen N set about the attack and the score rattled to 50 before Glen was bowled, another wicket soon fell before Jacob C and Declan saw the side home after just 10 overs. A good and convincing victory.

Winning Start for 1sts and 3rds

Justin James

A win on the opening day of the season for the 1st team was welcome relief after the nightmares of last season.

Put into bat by opponents Hockley on a damp pitch, the batsmen knew they were going to have a fight on their hands. A couple of early wickets were lost and the pressure began to build. This was turned around by a great innings of 70 from Justin James. Several other batsmen contributes with 20s and 30s. The total was eventually pushed on to 214.

It was always going to be a tough chase for Hockley and this was made even harder after a tight start from the EMT bowlers restricting Hockley to just 30 off the first 20 overs. Wickets were hard to come by from Ekco but the required rate sprialled. "Declaration bowling" was used to try and induce the big shot and a mistake. Hockley fell 40 runs short for the loss of just three wicket.

A good win with contributions from most of the team. Congratulations to all and let's all look forward to next week!

The 3rd team also got off to a winning start while the 4th team fell short in their run chase. More details to follow....

EMTCC Win Laurie Evans Memorial Trophy

EMTCC won the annual pre season match against Old Southendians. In a tight match, EMTCC set 180 after losing the toss. Runs came throughout the batting order to set what looked to be a slightly below par target.

Old Southendians, in reply avoided a few early alarms to be in a strong position at the halfway mark of their innings. Runs got harder to come by and the wickets started falling and OS fell about 20 runs short of the target.

Thanks, as usual, go to OS for their hospality and we wish them well for the forthcoming season.
